Loans are a financial tool used by millions of Malaysians — for homes, vehicles, education, medical costs or essential expenses that can’t wait. Chosen wisely, a loan helps you move forward without waiting years. Follow these seven steps.
1. Be clear on the purpose.
A loan is most useful when it solves a real need: an emergency, something that helps you work or earn, or replacing more expensive debt.
2. Borrow the right amount.
Work out what you really need — not so little that the problem isn’t solved, not so much that the instalment becomes a burden.
3. Work out a comfortable instalment.
As a general guide, keep all instalments below about 40% of take-home pay. Use the 50/30/20 budget to see your room.
4. Compare the true cost.
Look at the effective rate and the total repayable, including charges. (Read: Flat Rate vs Effective Rate.)
5. Choose a licensed lender.
Banks are regulated by Bank Negara Malaysia; moneylenders must be licensed by KPKT. Licensed lenders are bound by interest caps, written agreements and fair collection rules. (Read: Licensed Lenders vs Ah Long.)
6. Read and keep the agreement.
Understand the rate, term, late charges and early-settlement terms.
7.Plan your repayments.
Set up auto-debit and keep a small emergency buffer so instalments are always on time — which also builds a good credit record for the future.
