Whenever you apply for a loan, credit card or phone financing, the lender checks your credit record. The two names you hear most are CCRIS and CTOS.
CCRIS
(Central Credit Reference Information System) is run by Bank Negara Malaysia. It records your borrowing from financial institutions and your repayment history for the last 12 months, including credit applications. It holds facts only — no score.
CTOS
is a private credit reporting agency. It combines CCRIS data with other information (such as court and bankruptcy records) and produces a credit score from 300 to 850.
How to check CCRIS for free (eCCRIS)
- Go to eccris.bnm.gov.my and choose “Daftar Sekarang” (Register).
- Enter your name, MyKad number, date of birth, phone number and email.
- Verify your identity with an RM1 internet-banking transfer — it is refunded.
- Log in with the OTP and set a password.
- View, download or print your report.
Note: CCRIS is not real-time. Institutions report by the 10th of the following month, so a loan settled in May may only show as settled around 10 June.
What to check
- Every account is really yours (an unknown one can signal identity theft).
- No late payments recorded by mistake.
- Settled loans are marked as settled.
Report errors to the institution that submitted the data.
Keep your record healthy
- Pay on time (set up auto-debit).
- Avoid many applications in a short period.
- Use only a small part of your card limit.
- Don’t act as a guarantor without understanding the risk.
Key takeaways
- CCRIS = Bank Negara’s factual record, CTOS = a private score.
- Check CCRIS free via eCCRIS at least once a year.
