A side income can help \u2014 if it\u2019s safe and well planned.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Realistic ideas<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Existing skills (tuition, translation, graphic design, video editing, computer repair).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gig work (food and parcel delivery, e-hailing).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Selling online (home-made food, pre-loved items, crafts on e-commerce platforms).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local services (house or car cleaning, pet sitting).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avoid &#8220;jobs&#8221; that are really scams.<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Red flags: paying a deposit or \u201cregistration fee\u201d, high pay for very easy tasks, being asked to recruit others, or being asked to lend your bank account. A lent account can be used as a <strong>mule account<\/strong>, and you can be investigated by the police.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manage the extra money well<\/h2>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep side income in a separate account so it\u2019s easy to track.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep records of income and expenses (receipts, platform statements).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give it a job: build your emergency fund, clear high-interest debt, or save for the future.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tax and protection<\/h2>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Side income generally has to be declared on your annual LHDN tax return \u2014 check LHDN\u2019s official guidance or ask a tax agent. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SOCSO (PERKESO) runs a social security scheme for the self-employed, including gig workers, covering work-related accidents. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The self-employed can also contribute voluntarily to EPF.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Look after yourself:<\/strong> extra income isn\u2019t worth it if your health or main job suffers.
